On behalf of the botanical community living outside of China I express deep regret at the passing of Wu Zhengyi, one of the greatest botanists of his time. He knew not only the plants of China but also those of the whole North Temperate Zone better than any of his contemporaries, and made deeply important contributions to our understanding of them, their relationships, and their geography. Scholarly from a very early age, he was a master of Chinese language and literature. Raised as the son of an important and distinguished family in Yangzhou, he fit the New China well as it developed during his long and productive life. He was a steadfast friend with whom I had the pleasure of climbing Emeishan in 1980 and co-chairing the Editorial Committee of the Flora of China project for its entire 26-year span. He taught many and encouraged many, and we shall profoundly miss his presence among us.
