If you never go to the Global Allium Garden (Kunming Center), you will never truly witness the beauty of allium flowers. As COP15 draws near, this “world allium garden,” which conducts the comprehensive and systematic collection, conservation and research of allium plants from around the world, and which finds and utilizes resources, has once again attracted people’s attention. Allium flowers, which bloom every year, have become a tool of the Belt and Road Initiative to promote people-to-people communication and public science education. There are more than 500 varieties of allium plants in the world, distributed mainly in Afghanistan, Turkey, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Mongolia and other countries and regions along the Tianshan Mountains and Himalayas in Asia. In addition, there are 110 native and cultivated species recorded in China, most of which have a special smell — something like onion and garlic. Allium plants have important economic value. Many varieties, which have been cultivated and used by humans as vegetables, medicines and decorative plants for a long time, are closely related to human civilization. The construction of a global allium garden on the basis of mutual benefit between China and Uzbekistan — both major sources and distribution centers of allium plants — is of great significance to the two countries.

It consists of the “Kunming Center,” which is located in Yunnan, China, and the “Tashkent Center,” which is located in Uzbekistan. The China–Uzbekistan Global Allium Garden (Kunming Center), which covers an area of more than 3,700 square meters, was established in November 2017 and is located in the Kunming Botanical Garden (East Garden) of the CAS Kunming Institute of Botany. Since its establishment, a series of activities, such as micro-topography transformation, live plant introduction, exchanges, nursery cultivation, planting, landscape enhancement and live plant maintenance, have been carried out. In April 2018, the Global Allium Garden (Kunming Center) opened to the public. In September of the same year, landscaping and improvement of the park was launched again to improve its landscape, introduce new varieties and carry out related scientific research and monitoring activities. In December of the same year, the office of the China–Uzbekistan Global Allium Garden (Kunming Center) was officially opened in the Kunming Botanical Garden of the Kunming Institute of Botany CAS. In May 2018, the International Cooperation Bureau of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Kunming Institute of Botany launched the China–Uzbekistan Global Allium Garden (Tashkent Center) in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, together with the Uzbekistan Academy of Sciences and its Institute of Botany. The time-honored Institute of Botany of the Uzbekistan Academy of Sciences, which has a collection of more than 1.5 million plant specimens, is the largest herbarium in Central Asia. It had an allium garden 50 years ago that collected and preserved 50 varieties of allium plants. With joint efforts from the Kunming Institute of Botany, it has been rebuilt in the form of a “global allium garden.” At present, the Global Allium Garden (Tashkent Center) has collected and conserved more than 100 varieties of allium plants, making itself an important base for the protection, research, resource mining and scientific dissemination of wild allium plants in Central Asia. It has introduced varieties from China , Iran, Kazakhstan, Afghanistan and Turkey. Taking a pattern of “one garden, two centers,” the two parts of the global allium garden closely cooperate with each other while also maintaining focus on their own collections. In addition to their 500 varieties of allium plants in conservation, the two parties also pay attention to the exchange of germplasms, personnel training and business exchanges. Under the cooperation framework of the Belt and Road Initiative, they have also carried out a series of activities such as the cultivation of new varieties, the expansion of the propagation of allium varieties with important economic and cultural value, and the development of derivative products.
